Tour De Hoef and Ter Aar

The route starts at Restaurant De Oude School. The Nieuwkoopse Plassen are one of the last extensive low peat areas that the Netherlands once had. You will find swamps, but also hay fields, flowery meadows and reed fields. And a striking silence by Randstad standards. Along the river De Meije you can see the almost sixty meter high white water tower from 1932 from a distance. This iconic national monument is also popularly called Pietje Potlood. You also drive past the Langeraarssche Plassen, which were created in the sixteenth century by peat extraction. There are still some swamp forests in this bird-rich nature reserve. Along the rivers De Amstel and De Kromme Mijdrecht you have a beautiful view from the dike over the picturesque polders with their extensive grasslands, ditches and old farms.
