Nieuwkoop, South Holland, The Netherlands
Cycling route: 360720
Provided by: Groots Genieten
The Nieuwkoopse Plassen are one of the last extensive lowland peat areas that the Netherlands once had. You will find marshes, but also hayfields, flowery meadows and reed fields. And a remarkable silence for Randstad standards. Along the river De Meije you can see the almost sixty-metre high white water tower from 1932 from a distance. This iconic national monument is also popularly called Pietje Potlood. You will also drive along the Langeraarsche Plassen that were created in the sixteenth century by peat extraction. In this bird-rich nature reserve there are still a few swamp forests. Along the rivers De Amstel and De Kromme Mijdrecht you have a beautiful view from the dike over the picturesque polders with their extensive grasslands, ditches and old farms.
