Description
Behind Almelo it is wonderful to cycle through one of the quietest areas of the Netherlands: rural Twente. An ideal route to freshen up, while enjoying the natural beauty and the many characteristic farms that you see in and around the old villages.
Midsummer Night's Dream
The route leads you through the picturesque village of Hertme, among other things. On the Hertmerweg you will pass the striking open-air theater that was built in 1955 on the initiative of pastor Jan Veeger. The roof was installed in the 1960s. Many performances have been staged in the theater, such as Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream. Just before Zenderen you can take a look at the beautiful Carmelite convent that was founded in 1855.
Coulisse landscape
Twente is famous for its idyllic bocage landscape: a lovely sloping mosaic of forests, heaths, stream valleys, meadows and hedgerows. Every time you wonder what surprise awaits you after the next corner. Towards the end of your route you will pass the Saasveldermolen (or Soaseler Möl as the people of Twente call it) which is located near a small nature reserve. This corn mill dates from 1870. After getting off, you can enjoy the good Twente life at Hotel Jachtlust.
