The peace behind Almelo

Your route starts at De Stiftsjuffer. Behind Almelo it is wonderful to cycle through one of the quietest areas of the Netherlands: the rural Twente. Twente is famous for its idyllic coulisse landscape: a lovely rolling mosaic of forests, heathlands, stream valleys, meadows and hedgerows. Nice and varied, with the characteristic farms that you see in and around the old villages. Every time a surprise awaits you after the next bend. The route takes you through the picturesque village of Hertme. On the Hertmerweg you will pass the striking open-air theatre that was built in 1955 on the initiative of pastor Jan Veeger. Many performances have been performed in the theatre, such as Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Just before Zenderen you can take a look at the beautiful Carmelite monastery that was founded in 1855.
