Along the Zuid-Beveland canal, through the orchards and the center of Kapelle
The Zuid-Beveland Canal opened in October 1866. It was once one of the busiest canals in Western Europe. In the 1960s there were approximately 100,000 ships per year. The'parlevinkers\\\' delivered groceries to the passing ships and this was an important industry in Wemeldinge and Hansweert. During this ride you will learn more about the history of the parlevinkers.
Sights:
* marina and mills of Wemeldinge
* postal bridge: from here you can see the inland vessels passing by up close
* Seqoiahof: garden and garden terrace
* lock complex in Hansweert. This is now dry and dates from the 19th century. From here you can follow a parlevinker path with mooring posts with photos and information about the parlevinkers. Hansweert was known in the 20th century as'Klein Antwerpen\\\'.
* At the point at Hansweert you can see the enormous seagoing ships sailing across the Western Scheldt on their way to Antwerp.
* On the way back to Wemeldinge you pass Kapelle. The fruit growing museum is a nice interesting stop.
