Description

From Maastricht you can reach the French-speaking Land of Herve in Belgium. The cycle route goes via's-Gravenvelden, Hombourg and Moresnet straight through the rolling landscape to Raeren. Today's destination is Eupen/Eynatten.

Land of Herve
You cycle through a rolling landscape with hills a few hundred meters high. Because it is not very wooded, there are often beautiful views over the hedge-lined meadows.

Moresnet
Via's-Gravenvelden and Hombourg you drive to the former dwarf state of Moresnet. After Napoleon was defeated in 1815, Europe was redivided among the political rulers. Due to the rich zinc and lead soils, no agreement was reached about the area around Moresnet. That is why this area was declared a neutral zone under the joint administration of Prussia and the Netherlands. In 1919 it was added to Belgium.

Raeren
From Moresnet you set course for Raeren, where the Iter and Periol streams meet. Here you will see the 14th-century castle, which now houses a pottery museum

Eupen
In the afternoon you will reach Eupen, which is close to the German border: it is therefore German-speaking.
