Bicycles are an integral part of the Utrecht streetscape. The small, cozy streets and alleys and the many bridges over canals form a perfect backdrop for cyclists, so it is not surprising that this means of transport is so popular in this city. This route takes you through the center of Utrecht to the green areas a little outside the city.
Fort Vechten and Fort Rhijnauwen
The starting point of this route is at a parking lot in the center of Utrecht. From here you cycle to the hamlet of Wayen, which consists of farms and ribbon development. Then you cycle through green areas to the town of Vechten. Before you enter Vechten you have a beautiful view of Fort Vechten, the second largest fort of the New Dutch Waterline. This fort is no less than 17 hectares in size and was built between 1867 and 1870. A little further along the route you look out over Fort Rhijnauwen. This fort is also part of the New Dutch Waterline.
End with a snack and a drink
Then you cycle through the center of Utrecht back to the starting point of the route. After your bike ride you can stroll along the canals or sit down on a terrace for a bite to eat and a drink. The possibilities are endless in Utrecht.
The New Dutch Waterline
The New Dutch Waterline is a military defense line that was used between 1815 and 1940. Water was used in this defense line as protection against the enemy by flooding areas. The Waterline is 85 kilometers long. A visit to one of the forts of the waterline is definitely worth it. You automatically imagine yourself in a different time when you walk around here.
