Friesland is more than a province with many lakes. In the east are the relatively high sandy soils of the Friese Wouden. Get on the saddle for a special ride.

Frisian churches
You drive through the Friese Wouden on low-traffic roads. A region characterized by a small-scale bocage landscape of beautiful forests, hedgerows, heaths, grasslands and meandering streams. You won't find terps here, but you will find many characteristic side farms and monumental buildings. And of course beautiful ancient churches, such as in Eastermar and Twijsel.

Columbus Cheese
The green of Veenklooster enjoys a protected village view. Here you see It Lytse Slot from 1870. And Fogelsangh State, a stins from 1646 that you can visit. You will also pass through Kollum. You can still experience the atmosphere of bygone times here, partly thanks to the beautiful fifteenth-century Maartenskerk. This village is also known for the raw milk Kollumer Cheese. The striking Reformed Church is located in Gerkesklooster. This fifteenth-century building was originally a monastery brewery, but was converted into a church in 1629.
