Tour of the Hoogeveense Vaart and Meppel

From your starting point near Meppel, you will cycle along the Hoogeveensche Vaart, a canal that leads from Hoogeveen to the Meppelerdiep near Meppel. The first section was completed in 1625. In the period 1964-1988, the canal was converted into a modern shipping canal: ships of at least 300 tons could sail through here, outside the built-up areas of Meppel and Hoogeveen. Now you can see both commercial and recreational shipping. There are three locks: the Rogatsluis, the Ossesluis and the Nieuwebrugsluis - always nice to take a look. Just before the end of the route, you will pass a beautiful historical spot: Kasteel De Havixhorst.
