Enjoy cycling in May
The historic town of Wijk bij Duurstede is the starting and ending point of this route. From here you cycle through the rural buildings full of orchards around the town. In May all the fruit trees are in full bloom. It is therefore definitely recommended to cycle this route in May, so that you can enjoy all the white and pink blossoms everywhere you look. The high-stem orchards that can be found in the Kromme Rijnstreek are almost nowhere else.
Places of interest and places to rest
Furthermore, this route takes you past Duurstede Castle, De Bosscherwaarden brick factory and the Werkhoven Water Tower. Part of the tour takes you along the dike along the Lek and you also cycle past various mills. In short, you will be amazed by this cycling route. Along the way, you will find all sorts of opportunities for a break with a cup of coffee. For example, stop at a tea garden or a farm shop. Duurstede Castle
In 1270, a keep was built on the site of the current Duurstede Castle. In the 15th century, the keep was expanded into an impressive castle by the then resident. The original tower can still be seen in the middle of the castle. At that time, the castle had seventy-five rooms. The outbuildings have not even been included. The castle then fell into complete disrepair until only a ruin remained. The castle was restored from 1883 onwards. In 2013, the castle was finally completely restored.
