What do you think of when you think of spring? Blossom of course! Celebrate spring with this blossom route in the beautiful Kromme Rijn region. You have never seen so many blossoming trees together.
Enjoy cycling in May
The historic town of Wijk bij Duurstede is the start and end point of this route. From here you cycle through the rural buildings full of fruit orchards surrounding the town. In May all fruit trees are in beautiful bloom. It is therefore definitely recommended to cycle this route in May, so that you can enjoy all the white and pink blossoms everywhere you look. The standard orchards that can be found in the Kromme Rijn region are almost impossible to find anywhere else.
Sights and moments of rest
Furthermore, this route takes you past Duurstede Castle, De Bosscherwaarden brick factory and the Werkhoven Water Tower. Part of the tour takes you over the dike along the Lek and you also cycle past various windmills. In short, you will be amazed by this cycle route. Along the way you will find all kinds of options for a break with a cup of coffee. For example, stop at a tea garden or a country store. Duurstede Castle
In 1270, a keep was built on the site of the current Duurstede Castle. In the 15th century, the keep was expanded into an imposing castle by the then resident. You can still see the original tower in the middle of the castle. At that time the castle had seventy-five rooms. The outbuildings are not even included. Then the castle completely fell into disrepair until only a ruin remained. The castle was restored from 1883. In 2013, the castle was finally completely restored.
