Along the water of the Weerribben

The origin of the Weerribben
During this walk you walk through the Weerribben, an area that is part of the Weerribben-Wieden National Park. The landscape here looks pristine, but nothing could be further from the truth. The Weerribben were created by peat extraction from the Middle Ages until shortly after the Second World War. The cut peat was left to dry on narrow strips of land that were intended for this purpose. These strips were called'ribs\\\'. While walking, enjoy the peace that is only occasionally disturbed by birdsong or a splash when a frog jumps into the water.

Flora and fauna
Reeds and cattails often grow on the edges of the water of the Weerribben. In the water itself you will find crab shear, water lilies, yellow plum and water hemlock that brighten up the area. The animals that you mainly see in this area are birds such as purple herons, the black tern and the reed warbler. Especially in the spring, the many birds in this area sing noisily, although nature lovers will not mind at all.
