Nature reserve Zwart Water is an old meander of the Maas. During this hike you walk around the Venkoelen, a large fen in an old Maas bed. The landscape around the water consists of vast forests, grasslands and the remains of heathlands.
Drainage and peat extraction
The Zwart Water nature reserve used to be a swamp. There is nothing left of it now, because the area was drained. The lake that is there now was created by peat extraction until the beginning of the 19th century. River clay was also extracted here to make bricks. In some places in the nature reserve you can still see traces of this clay extraction, such as the remains of the old tram line along which the clay was transported. The remaining pieces of land are now covered with all kinds of vegetation: from heather to deciduous trees.
Garden centre Leurs
The start and end point of this walk is at Tuincentrum Leurs on the edge of Venlo. Here you can have a nice cup of coffee with a piece of Limburg pie before departure or just satisfy your hunger after walking. Lunch, dinner, a high tea, it is all possible at the garden café. When you have recovered a bit, you can visit the cozy center of Venlo.
Surprising Venlo
Venlo is bustling with activity. Come and enjoy shopping in the centre of Venlo or indulge yourself with regional products and'Venloosch Alt\\\', a beer from Venlo. Where you can mainly go to the nature reserve Zwart Water for peace and natural beauty, you will find culture and a pleasant bustle here. A welcome change for hikers who also like to walk through cities instead of just through nature.
