Walking along the beautiful Venkoelen

Drainage and peat extraction
There used to be a swamp on the site of the Zwart Water nature reserve. There is nothing left of it now, because the area was drained. The lake that is now there was created by peat extraction until the beginning of the 19th century. River clay was also extracted here to make bricks. In some places in the nature reserve you can still see traces of this clay extraction, such as the remains of the old tram line along which the clay was transported. The remaining pieces of land are now covered with all kinds of vegetation: from heather to deciduous trees.

Garden Center Leurs
The start and end point of this walk is at Tuincentrum Leurs on the outskirts of Venlo. Here you can drink a nice cup of coffee with a piece of Limburg pie before departure or satisfy your hunger after walking. Lunch, dinner, a high tea, it's all possible at the garden café. When you have recovered a bit, you can visit the pleasant center of Venlo.
