Description
The Weerribben-Wieden National Park is a vast low-lying peat bog that you can perfectly explore by bicycle. This route takes you through De Weerribben with its many ditches and canals as well as through De Wieden with swamp forests, hay meadows and ponds. In this oasis of tranquility you can disconnect from the busy daily life and enjoy the landscape.
Peat extraction in the landscape
This cycling tour starts in the wetland nature reserve De Weerribben. The characteristic dead-straight ditches in this area were created when peat was excavated here. This peat was laid to dry on long strips of land, which you can still see in the landscape today. The De Wieden nature reserve was also created by peat extraction. From the 15th century, a lot of peat was removed here and all kinds of puddles were created.
Restaurant & Boat Rental Het Doevehuis
You will eventually end up in De Weerribben at Restaurant & Boat Rental Het Doevehuis. Get off your bike and take a seat in the restaurant to recover from all the activity with some refreshments. How about a tasty pancake or an extensive lunch? From the terrace you have a beautiful view over the water. A relaxing end to a day in the calm nature.
A historic bell tower
In Wanneperveen you will pass the Dutch Reformed Church from 1502. On the associated cemetery is a historic bell chair, the year of which is not exactly known. The oldest mention of the bell tower dates from 1767, but it may well be that the bell is much older. The bell tower is in poor condition, but restorations are underway.
