The border between Drenthe and Germany forms the backdrop to this cycling tour. Whether you are at the beginning or the end of the route, you are always just a short distance from the border. This way you can explore another country by bike from your own country.
Getting to know monastic life
At the start of this route you cycle a bit along the canal between Emmer-Compascuum and Ter Apel. You cycle into Ter Apel via quiet agricultural areas. Here you can visit the Museum Klooster Ter Apel. Take a tour of the monastery to become acquainted with monastic life of the past and present and view special paintings and statues related to monastic life. The tranquility of the monastery is also reflected in the rest of the route. You soon cross the border and then cycle for a long time through the calm German landscape.
Ter Apel
There used to be only the Ter Apel monastery on the site of the village of Ter Apel. This monastery was built in the 15th century and mainly served as a shelter for travelers and pilgrims. Since the 19th century, peat colonial ribbon buildings have also been found near the monastery. More and more buildings were built around the monastery and the village of Ter Apel was created.
