A walk in collaboration with the Oploo crop circle

Oploo is a cozy and picturesque village in the east of Brabant. This walk takes you along some historical highlights, through the nearby hamlet of Driehoek and through the rural outskirts of Oploo.

Glory
Oploo was an independent lordship from the end of the fourteenth century. There was even a small castle that was demolished in 1800. The current Kasteelgracht is a reminder of the period when the lordship existed. In the village centre, the contours of the castle are indicated with hedges. On the Grotestraat you can admire, among other things, the Sint Matthias. This church originally dates from 1732 and was enlarged in 1929.

Centuries-old mills
In Oploo there are two beautiful centuries-old mills. In the built-up area you walk past De Korenbloem, a corn mill dating from around 1800. D\\\'n Olliemeulen is also a real photo opportunity: this beautiful water mill dates from 1725. Nowadays grain is ground there, in the past oil was pressed there.

Toontje the dwarf
At D\\\'n Olliemeulen you will see the striking statue of Toon van Els (1865-1922). This man was also called Toontje d\\\'n dwarf because of his height of 1.40 meters. For years he worked as a shepherd. When sheep farming disappeared from this area around 1900, Toon started wandering from job to job. Eventually, wandering became his life motto. People started to mock Van Els, so that he - although he was certainly welcome in some places - became increasingly shy of people. Nowadays he is considered a local legend.
