From the historic heart of Dokkum you drive through the wide polder landscape towards the Wadden Sea. You see a number of beautiful ancient Frisian churches, such as in Brantgum. In Foudgum is the presbytery where the poet Piet Paaltjens (pseudonym of François Haverschmidt) lived. Holwerd enjoys a protected village view, including De Hoop, a monumental flour mill from the early eighteenth century. With all that beauty you could just miss your boat!
