The Old Peat Colonies in East Groningen are unique in Europe. Since the 17th century, a lot of peat has been cut in this area, resulting in a varied landscape. Over time, a completely new landscape emerged, with many long canals. There are various nature reserves on the higher sandy soils and the transitions to the lower peat soils.
De Wiede
In the built-up area of Veendam there is a polder between the Westerdiep and the Oosterdiep. The meandering river Oude Ae runs through this piece of old stream landscape located between Muntendam and Veendam. De Wiede is also a former water board in the province of Groningen. The steam pumping station stood on the corner of Bredeweg and Het Oude Verlaat.
Muntendam native garden & nature park between the Fens
The original Heemtuin dates from 1982 and was a tree-lined sheep pasture. Ultimately, it was transformed into a varied natural forest where you will find, among other things, a heathland and a pond. In recent years this has been expanded with an orchard with old varieties of fruit trees and an apiary. Nature takes its course in this 3.5 hectare former agricultural area. De Heemtuin has a visitor center and a catering facility.
Adriaan Tripbos
Young and old can enjoy the beautiful nature in the Adriaan Tripbos. The forest was created in 1994 for the residents of Sappemeer and the surrounding area. The vast majority of the forest consists of young deciduous forest, where many plants and animals can be found. There is a heathland area, a (swimming) lake and a lookout hill from which you have a great view.
Emergobos
For those who enjoy long walks and fishing, the Emergobos near Pekela is a good option. The Emergo was opened in 1973 as part of the recreational area located there. Around the lake you see older trees where many special breeding birds such as the gray tit and hawfinch can be found.
