Description
This route takes you through Volendam, Monnickendam and the island of Marken. You cycle through the vast polders of Laag Holland, the unique traditional Dutch landscape below sea level.
Flood Waterland
From the starting point you cycle to the Experience Volendam. With virtual reality glasses you can experience the flood disaster that hit Waterland in 1916. In Monnickendam you can admire the historic city center full of houses from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries: wow!
Peninsula Marken
The Waterlandse Zeedijk then takes you to picturesque Marken. The Rond Marken Excursion will teach you more about the history of this peninsula. Het Paard van Marken is an iconic lighthouse from 1839. At Bistro de Verkeerde Wereld you can enjoy a nice break. You return to Volendam with the ferry of the Volendam Marken Express.
Height Profile
In Laag Holland are the rustic villages of yesteryear. While cycling you will find Dutch history in the beautiful straight polder lines and the protected city and village views. Low Holland is a national landscape. The Defense Line of Amsterdam and the Beemster have been placed on the World Heritage list by UNESCO.
