The current appearance of the center is largely determined by the bombing of Rotterdam in 1940. Most of the historic center of the city was destroyed. It was a response by the German invaders to the resistance of the Dutch troops that slowed the German advance.
The rain of bombs lasted only fifteen minutes, but the consequences were dire. 24,000 homes, 32 churches and 2 synagogues were reduced to ashes. Due to this bombing, Rotterdam has a very different cityscape than other Dutch cities. The center consists largely of high-rise buildings and there is no old historic center.
