Walking through rural Laarne

From the picturesque Flemish town of Laarne you can make a beautiful hike through an agricultural landscape. You will also pass the Castle of Laarne. A museum is located in this beautiful ancient castle.

Horse dairy
The route starts in Laarne where you can admire the Sint-Macharius Church. The crossing tower of this hall church dates back to the fifteenth century. Outside Laarne you walk through a surprisingly quiet rural environment of fields and meadows. You pass the edge of the Hauw, a swampy old nature reserve that is part of the Dam valley. On the Lagen Heirweg you will see horse dairy't Kattenheye. This farm dates from 1500, the entrance gate is a beautiful monument.

Castle Larne
The moated castle in Laarne dates from the fourteenth century and is one of the most beautiful castles in Belgium. Only the keep remains of the original fortress. The remainder of the castle has been extensively refurbished and functions as a museum that you can visit every Sunday from May to September. The collection consists of tapestries, furniture, weapons and silverware. A restaurant is located in one of the outbuildings, from the terrace you have a beautiful view of the castle.
