A detour in Vries

With its protected village view, the Drenthe esdorp Vries is more than worth a visit. Just outside the village it is nice to take a detour along the old Holtveen.

St. Boniface Church
Part of Vries enjoys a protected village view. No wonder, given the Saxon farms you see here. You can really get a good look at them while walking. On the historic Brink you walk past one of the oldest churches in Drenthe: the St. Boniface Church. The nave and tower date from the twelfth century. The choir was built in 1425. There was a church here before the year 800, probably made of wood.

Freezer Holten
Just west of Vries you walk through the real Drenthe, namely through the nature reserve De Holten. The Holten is a former stream valley with small height differences. You walk through an old piece of forest with a peat bog where peat was dug not so long ago. It is wonderfully quiet here: that is also typical of Drenthe.
