Description
In East Groningen you can make beautiful varied cycling trips. This route takes you through the rural triangle of Winschoten, Oude Pekela and Blijham. A wonderful trip to clear your head.
Peat reclamation villages
You pass through Zandstroom and Morige, two former peat reclamation villages. You can still see this history in the straight plots and parallel avenues. At Wedderveer you pass the Wedderbergen, an idyllic shifting dune area. The Westerwoldse Aa meanders along these dunes, on the other side is the Spinnenkop Wedderveer: a small sawmill from 1938.
Ole White
In Oud Pekela you pass De Onrust, a flour mill from 1850. At Pekelahof you can get off and enjoy a coffee and something tasty. The beautiful Winschoten received city rights as early as 1391. The town was in the middle of the marshes and was a well-known stopover for travelers to and from Germany. On the Market Square is the thirteenth-century Dutch Reformed Church, a gem. From d\\\'Olle Witte, a sixteenth-century tower, you have a beautiful view of the city and surroundings.
