Description
East Groningen offers beautiful, varied cycling routes. This route takes you through the rural triangle of Winschoten, Oude Pekela, and Blijham. A wonderful ride to clear your head.
Peat extraction villages
You'll pass through Zandstroom and Morige, two former peat extraction villages. This history is still evident in the straight plots and parallel lanes. Near Wedderveer, you'll pass the Wedderbergen, an idyllic area of drifting dunes. The Westerwoldse Aa river meanders along these dunes, and on the opposite bank stands the Spinnenkop Wedderveer: a small sawmill dating from 1938.
Olle Witte
In Old Pekela, you'll pass De Onrust, a grain mill dating from 1850. At Pekelahof, you can take a break and enjoy a coffee and a treat. The beautiful town of Winschoten received its city charter as early as 1391. Situated in the middle of the marshes, it was a popular stopover for travelers to and from Germany. On the Market Square stands the 13th-century Dutch Reformed Church, a true gem. From d'Olle Witte, a 16th-century tower, you have a magnificent view of the city and its surroundings.
