Description
On the border of Groningen and Drenthe you can enjoy cycling through the wide polder. But this area also has a rich history, as evidenced by the special estates, ancient churches and picturesque village greens.
Mensinge estate
The Brink van Roden is a real must see. At number ten, for example, is the Winsinghhof, a farm from 1672. The nave of the Catharinakerk dates from the fourteenth century. Further on, at Landgoed Mensinge, in the age-old manor house, you will find a museum that gives a good idea of how the rich lived here. And around the Leekstermeer, the largest lake in Drenthe, you drive a little later through the rugged low moor areas of the Onlanden.
Borg Nienoord
Lovers of medieval churches will get their money's worth in Midwolde and Lettelbert. Get off at the sixteenth-century Borg Nienoord: a playful exhibition shows the glorious history of the former residents. You will also learn about traveling by carriage in the nineteenth century.
