Description
On the border of Groningen and Drenthe you can cycle through the vast polder. But this area also has a rich history, as evidenced by the special estates, centuries-old churches and picturesque village greens.
Mensinge estate
The Brink of Roden is a real must-see. For example, at number ten is the Winsinghhof, a farm from 1672. The nave of the Catharina Church dates from the fourteenth century. Further on, at the Mensinge Estate, in the centuries-old manor house, you will find a museum that gives a good idea of how the wealthy lived here. And around the Leekstermeer, the largest lake in Drenthe, you will soon drive through the rugged peat areas of the Onlanden.
Borg Nienoord
Lovers of medieval churches will get their money's worth in Midwolde and Lettelbert. Stop off again at the sixteenth-century Nienoord castle: a playful exhibition shows the glorious history of the former residents. You will also learn about traveling by carriage in the nineteenth century.
