Description

In Drenthe you can still make beautiful long bike rides through the vast silence and the history-rich landscape. This route takes you through the former peat area behind Coevorden and the German border.

Amsterdamscheveld
The area around the hamlet of Amsterdamscheveld once belonged to a vast raised moor. In 1850, a group of Amsterdam investors bought a piece of peat land here that served as a hunting ground until the early 1900s. It was later excavated. On Griendtsveenstraat you will pass three former staff residences (at numbers 39, 41 and 57) of the family that ran the Griendtsveen Turflaagsel Maatschappij. They are national monuments. A little further on you will pass the unique Industrial Narrow Railway Museum, where there are two more national monuments.

Picturesque Schoonebeek
In the hamlet of Oosterse Bos you drive past several monumental Saxon farms from the early 1800s. Schoonebeek is one of the oldest mining villages in Drenthe, it was founded in the thirteenth century. In 1943, the second largest oil field in mainland Western Europe was found here. Oil was extracted here until 1996. In the center of Schoonebeek there is still an old-fashioned pumpjack as a reminder. After this special route you can refuel at Camping and Bungalowpark De Wolfskuylen. Here you will find all the facilities for a carefree holiday.

Industrial Narrow Gauge Railway Museum
Just before the village of Weiteveen, near the German border, you will pass the Industrial Narrow Railway Museum. This unique museum was founded in 1984 and has a collection of field railway locomotives, wagons, tools, photographs and other museum material. You can make a trip through a beautiful area on a largely original route that was used for peat transport in the past. During the ride you will pass the only remaining peat litter factory in the Netherlands. There is also a 4-track narrow-gauge depot from 1910 on the museum grounds. Both the peat litter factory and the depot are national monuments. Would you like to discover more of Drenthe during your stay at Camping and Bungalowpark De Wolfskuylen? Then also drive the routes 341570 and 341571.
