Cycling for hours on the Veluwe

On the Veluwe you will find the vast forests and heaths that you dream of as a cyclist. This route also takes you past some cultural-historical hotspots.

Royal Forestry
You drive for a long time through the woods of the Koninklijke Houtvesterij Het Loo, the largest contiguous forest area in the Netherlands. Long avenues with tall deciduous trees alternate here with winding paths and suddenly open heaths. It is extremely quiet in this area. At the edge of the forest you pass the Wenumse Molen, a beautiful fourteenth-century watermill on the Wenumse Beek. It has served as a corn mill, but also as a copper mill.

Ancient burial mounds
The sloping Stakenbergse- and Elspeetse Heide are a remnant of the immense heath plain that once covered this part of the Veluwe. It is a cultural-historically valuable area, because there are several ancient burial mounds here. You will also find old oak coppice groves here. It is nice and quiet on the heath, you only hear the bleating of the heath sheep that traditionally graze here.

Dropzone Noorderheide
DZ Rummy III, a drop zone from the Second World War, was located on the nearby Noorderheide. In the period September-October 1944, the Allies dropped containers with equipment (such as weapons, ammunition and medicines) and people here by parachute for the Dutch resistance. The goods were collected by truck. If collection was not possible, the containers were buried in the ground to be dug up again later.
