Cycling around the Schoonebeek oil village

It is wonderful to cycle around Schoonebeek through the vast silence of Drenthe. Your starting point is one of the oldest mining villages in Drenthe. The cultural history of Schoonebeek can be felt everywhere here. You will see Saxon farms, but also old-fashioned yes-men. In 1943, the second largest oil field on mainland Western Europe was found here. Oil was extracted until 1996. This route takes you from the oil village through picturesque towns such as Erica, Klazienaveen and Weiteveen. In the Bargerveen nature reserve you feel like you are home to hundreds of bird species.
