Behind the Achterhoek

Just like in the Achterhoek, you can also enjoy cycling in neighboring Germany. With this route you will discover the rural region around the German towns of Anholt, Werth and Isselburg.

Anholtse Broek
In the Achterhoek you will still find centuries-old cultural landscapes that are intersected by babbling streams. You drive through Anholtse Broek, an area west of Breedenbroek that belongs to the Salm-Salm family, which has owned Anholt Castle since 1641. You will pass the Kempermolen, a flour mill from 1882. In the center of Dinxperlo you will drive past the beautiful St. Liborius Church, the tower dates from 1400. At the market you can also admire a beautiful farm from around 1800.

Cycling through Germany
Also just across the border you cycle through a quiet scenic landscape. In Werth you cross the Issel (which is called the Oude IJssel in the Netherlands) and from the bridge you have a beautiful view, including the Werther Mill from 1498. The tower of this mill was initially part of the city defense. 

Anholt Castle
Just across the border at Megchelen you pass Anholt Castle. The origins of the impressive moated castle lie in a fortress from the twelfth century. The castle has been regularly renovated over the centuries. A museum has been opened in the castle. Among other things, you will find the largest private collection of paintings in North Rhine-Westphalia. This collection contains many works by Dutch masters such as Rembrandt and Jan van Goyen. The beautiful library and armory are also a must see.
