Park Rheinaue is a hip and cozy city park on both sides of the Rhine in Bonn, the city that served as the seat of government of West Germany until German reunification. The 160-hectare park was created in 1979 as part of a national flower show.
Auensee
The route takes you through the western, main part of the park. You walk along the banks of the Rhine, of course, but also along the Auensee, the 15-hectare lake in the middle of the park. You cross the lake via a pontoon bridge. You can also float on the water with a pedal boat. One of the most famous attractions in the park is the Japanese Garden. There is also a Lepelbos, a modern work of art.
Canadian totem pole
Striking are the 26 Roman tombstones on the Roman Street. They are casts of authentic tombstones and altars found in this region. After all, Bonn was founded before the era. The 6.50 meter high totem pole that you encounter is authentic. It's a gift from Canada. The pole was made on the spot by an Indian: Chief Tony Hunt. It took him four months.
Sightseeing in Bonn
From the park you can see two striking tall buildings. The lowest is Der Langen Eugen from 1969, which has been home to the United Nations since 2006. The longest is 162 meters high, dates from 2002 and is called Der Post Tower where, guess what... Deutsche Post and DHL are located. If you also want to visit the center of Bonn: on the Markt you can admire, among other things, the eighteenth-century town hall, which was built in Rococo style. Bonn's Münster Church has five striking towers that can be seen from afar: they are the symbol of the city. The Poppelsdorfer Allee is the most picturesque street in Bonn, also because there is a castle almost at both ends: the Kurfürstliche Schloss and the Poppelsdorfer Schloss.
