Münster is a German city with a Dutch touch. The city was founded by the Frisian missionary Liudger. And in 1648 the famous Peace of Münster was concluded here, which ended the Eighty Years' War. In this friendly student city, the nice terraces are there for the taking.
WWII
Münster's old heart was almost completely destroyed in the Second World War. Especially the historic buildings around the market square had to die. The inhabitants rebuilt their center almost in detail. The interior of the fourteenth-century town hall was saved just in time and is therefore original. You can visit the town hall and the Friedenssaal. Nice detail: the carillon plays the Wilhelmus every year on King's Day!
Jan van Leiden
You also walk past the thirteenth-century Münster Cathedral. And the Saint Lambert Church from 1450. An iron cage still hangs from the tower. Among other things, the body of Jan van Leiden, one of the Anabaptists, is still hanging here. If you spend the night in Münster, be sure to stand at the tower just before nine o'clock. One of the last European tower keepers, a young woman, blows a horn from the spire every half hour.
Haus der Niederlande
Just behind the Lambertus Church is the Huis der Nederlanden, at Alter Steinweg 6/7. Here the Peace of Münster is chained. Today the building houses various institutions in the field of Dutch language, literature, politics and history. One of the former bishops of Münster is also known in the Netherlands: Bernhard von Galen, or Bommen Berend, the man who made a failed attempt to conquer Groningen in 1672. The route starts and ends at the large car park in front of the eighteenth-century Münster Castle. The lock is used by the local university.
