Cologne is a wonderful city to stroll through at your leisure. This route takes you through the Altstadt. Take a day for it, because you will see many historical buildings, special architecture and museums.
Along the Rhine The route starts at Rheinau, an old island in the Rhine. From the point you have a beautiful view of the Deutzer Brucke. The current bridge dates from 1948, but the Romans built a bridge on this spot as early as 310. From the Rhine bank you can see Deutz on the right, on the left you pass the Church of St. Mary in Lyskirchen, dating from 1200, one of the twelve Romanesque basilicas.
Cologne Cathedral When you walk into the city centre, you will soon see the symbol of Cologne: the Cathedral. This is the largest cathedral in Germany. Construction began in 1248, but was only completed centuries later (in 1880!). On the Burgmauer you can still see a small part of the former Roman fortress wall from 50 AD. The route ends again at Rheinau, where you can have a drink. Just like in so many other pleasant places along your route.
