Cologne is a wonderful city to stroll through at your leisure. This route takes you through the Altstadt. Feel free to take a day off, because you will see many historic buildings, special architecture and museums.
Along the Rhine
The route starts on Rheinau, an old island in the Rhine. From the point you have a beautiful view of the Deutzer Brücke. The current bridge dates from 1948, but a bridge was built on this spot by the Romans as early as 310. From the Rhine bank you can see Deutz on the right, on the left you pass the Church of St. Mary in Lyskirchen, one of the twelve Romanesque basilicas, dating from 1200.
Cologne Cathedral
If you walk into the center, you will soon see the symbol of Cologne: the Dom. This is the largest cathedral in Germany. Construction started in 1248, but was not completed until centuries later (in 1880!). At the Burgmauer you can still see a small part of the former Roman fortress wall from 50 AD. The route ends back at Rheinau, where you can have a drink. Just like in so many other cozy places on your route.
Tour tip; Hiking with kids! Routes up to 5 km are ideal
