Haselünne, Lower Saxony, Germany
Hiking route: 340546
Provided by: Groots Genieten
Just below Haselünne, one of the oldest towns in the German Emsland, you can take a beautiful walk through the Haselünner Kuhweide. This protected nature reserve of about 72 hectares is one of the few remaining authentic cultural landscapes in the Emsland.
Middle Ages
This wonderful walk takes you back in time several centuries: the Haselünner Kuhweide has been grazed since the Middle Ages. Even now there are grazers, although they are exotic species: Scottish Highlanders and originally Eastern European Konik horses. In this area it is remarkably quiet, even for German standards. A drainage channel runs through the area. You can see water plants here such as arrowhead and water violet.
Juniper herbs
The route takes you through fields of heather and through forests of oak, alder, birch and especially Scots pine. Half of the nature reserve is covered with juniper shrubs. A unique view, since this species is also threatened in its survival in Germany. You also walk along the (sometimes marshy) banks of the Hase, a meandering river that flows into the Ems near Meppen. On the other side of the rippling water, the meadows turn into forest, a photogenic view.
