This route takes you through the rolling Dutch-German border area along the Rhine. You cycle through the Bergherbos and the Emmericher Ward. You will also see some beautiful buildings, such as Anholt Castle.
Hanseatic city of Emmerich
The first kilometers lead you through the nice and quiet countryside of Netterden and Megchelen, two villages on the edge of the Achterhoek. After you cross the border, you drive through the beautiful forests below Anholt. A little later you cycle through the floodplains along the Rhine to Emmerich am Rhein. There are several sights on the quay of this old Hanseatic city, such as the Saint Aldegundis Church and Saint Martini Church. The longest suspension bridge (1228 meters) in Germany lies across the river.
Emmericher Ward
Further on you drive through the Emmericher Ward, one of the few remaining natural forests on the Rhine. Cycling along the dike you will soon have beautiful views over the Rhine. And you see that the Rhine flows into the Netherlands at Spijk, not at Lobith. In Tolkamer you pass the former customs office, a monument from 1906. You will also pass two flour mills: Düffels Möll from 1860 and Tolhuys Coornmolen from 1888.
Anholt Castle
Just across the border at Megchelen you pass Anholt Castle. The origins of the impressive moated castle lie in a fortress from the twelfth century. The castle has been regularly renovated over the centuries. A museum has been opened in the castle. Among other things, you will find the largest private collection of paintings in North Rhine-Westphalia. This collection contains many works by Dutch masters such as Rembrandt and Jan van Goyen. The beautiful library and armory are also a must see.
