A tour around the Biesbosch

Ferries, polders, river banks, old villages and the Biesbosch National Park: you can experience it all with this beautiful water-rich route.

Island of Dordrecht
From the heart of De Biesbosch you take a long tour along the edges of the national park. From the dikes you have beautiful views over the wetlands of reedlands, creeks and swamp forests. You can cross the Nieuwe Merwede, the river that divides the national park in two, by ferry. On the former Island of Dordrecht you can spot many birds, perhaps even a white-tailed eagle. So bring binoculars!

Below Merwede
You drive a few kilometers through Sliedrecht and Hardinxveld-Giessendam. Here you will see beautiful churches and old Dutch buildings. From the banks you have beautiful views over the busy Beneden Merwede. On the western edge of Werkendam you will pass Fort Steurgat, dating from 1881, the southernmost fort of the New Dutch Waterline.

Waxing Moon
Towards the end of your route you will pass the Waxing Moon, a work of art by Paul de Kort. It consists of water channels and dikes and looks different every time due to the influence of the weather, the tide and the seasons. With this work of art he once again emphasizes the rarity of the Biesbosch. After all, this nature reserve is one of the few freshwater areas in the world where there is an ebb and flow. Climb the landscaped hill on the Bandijk to discover the work of art.
