A day in the Green Forest

The triangle between Tilburg, Den Bosch and Eindhoven is so rich in nature reserves that it has been given the name Het Groene Woud. This route takes you through this varied area with its charming old villages.

The Kampina
In the Kampina you cycle through quiet forests and through the vast heathland. In August, the heather begins to bloom, turning the heather into a purple sea. At the fens there are regular benches to enjoy the view and the silence. From the Kampina you can cycle straight into the old Landgoed Nemerlaer. To the south of the Essche Stroom the landscape is swampy, to the north you cycle through a beautiful park forest.

The Mortals
South of Boxtel you cycle through the Mortelen, a small-scale bocage landscape of poplar groves, coniferous forests and grass and arable land. You seem to be cycling back in time here to the old-fashioned Brabant farmland from before the land consolidations. In the spring the meadows are colored lilac by the many Pentecostal flowers.

Monastery castle
While cycling you will see many beautiful long-gabled farms and monumental buildings in and around the villages. At Boxtel you will pass Kasteel Stapelen, the oldest mention of which dates back to 1293. Many old elements can still be seen in the southern part of the castle. The north side was almost completely renovated in the nineteenth century. Since 1915, the castle has been used as a monastery by the Assumptionists.
