Cycling through the west of Friesland

This route takes you through Franeker, Harlingen, Makkum: old Frisian towns with a rich history. Between these places it is wonderful to cycle through the wide polders and along the foaming Wadden Sea. After a cup of coffee at Hotel-Restaurant Poort van Franeker, you get on your bike. The town has dozens of national monuments. There is also plenty to see in Harlingen. For example, you can visit the Hannemahuis. Makkum was once located on the Zuiderzee and acquired wealth, especially in the seventeenth century. Some monumental buildings still bear witness to this. At Witmarsum you drive through the Flietsterbosk, a varied recreational forest where several species of deciduous trees grow. You pass It Fliet, a street where there is a monument for Menno Simmons, born in Witmarsum.
