Frisian mound villages
The route takes you through characteristic Frisian terp villages such as Anjum and Metslawier. You will see some beautiful medieval churches, such as the church of Aalsum, which stands on a remarkably high mound. In Wetsens you will pass the Ropta, a corn and hulling mill from 1836. You will drive a few kilometers along the edge of the Lauwersmeer National Park. It is un-Dutch quiet here. From Oostmahorn you have a beautiful view of this pearl on the Wadden Sea.

Eleven cities city of Dokkum
Dokkum is one of the more famous Frisian Eleven Cities. The historic fortified city was founded as early as 754. Dokkum has a protected cityscape and has more than 140 national monuments. So it is definitely worth getting off here to admire, for example, the town hall from 1610 or the Admiralty House from 1618.

Docker coffee
Would you like to drink a real local specialty? Then order a Dokkumer coffee: a shot of Berenburger has been added to this, after which the hot drink is covered with whipped cream. If you want to drink it authentically, don't stir the coffee! It should be drunk away under the cream. The Berenburger you get here is probably from the Sonnema brand. Fedde Sonnema started his distillery and liqueur distillery in Dokkum. The drink is currently distilled in Bolsward. The former factory is still there: on Sonnemapleintje.
