Benjamin Broekema Walk

Benjamin Heiman Broekema (1904-1942) was an active, Jewish socialist who was great in his Groningen country. A man who thought, spoke and wrote in the language of his birthplace. Broekema was in the middle of the village life of Warffum in Groningen. A typical club man, member of the theater club, the brass band, the football club and the local department of the VARA and the SDAP. His education was meager. After six grades of primary school, he became a butcher, like many rural Jews. But in him the fire of writing burned. His literary ambition resulted in an extensive oeuvre: more than forty plays, dozens of short stories, a collection of poems and a regional novel. He also wrote weekly for the Gronings-Drentse edition of Het Volk, a publication of the Arbeiderspers.
