A city trip in the Achterhoek

In the Achterhoek you will find some pleasant towns with a surprisingly rich history. This route takes you through Ruurlo and Groenlo. In the beautiful Achterhoek bocage landscape you will pass the special Farm Museum De Lebbenbrugge.

Old Kroezeboom
Ruurlo once started as a settlement in a vast area with forests and marshes. Today it is a pleasant town with a beautiful historic core. At the intersection between Borculoseweg and Kroezelaan you will see one of the last two Kroeze trees in the Netherlands: a tree to mark an intersection and to administer justice there. It is estimated that this monumental pedunculate oak, with an age of 400 years, is one of the oldest trees in the Netherlands.

Cozy Green
Take the time to explore charming Groenlo at your leisure. You will see, among other things, the Old Calixtus Church that was built between 1275 and 1520. Two skulls have been bricked into the outside of the church to remind churchgoers that earthly life is finite. On the Mussenbergbolwerk, one of the few remaining fortifications, is the cannon that Frederik Hendrik donated to Groenlo in 1627. 

Farm museum De Lebbenbrugge
At the stream De Slinge you will pass an authentic location: the Lebbenbrugge. The rear house dates from 1400, the transverse house at the front was added around 1550. The building has had various functions throughout history: it served as a farm, toll house, inn and as a hunting lodge for the Lords of Borculo. During the peace negotiations in Münster it even served as a post office for a short time. Now a museum is housed in the old Saxon farmhouse.
