Walking along the Linde

On the border of Overijssel and Friesland there is a beautiful vast and water-rich landscape with ancient villages. What looks like a desolate primeval landscape was indeed created by humans. The ancient village of Oldemarkt soon appears on the horizon. On the Market Square you walk past the impressive Reformed Church, which originally dates from the fifteenth century. If you first walk into Hoofdstraat a bit to the right, you will see the Sint Willibrordus Church and then a beautiful monumental seventeenth-century house with stepped gables. You walk along the Linde, a small river that in this part forms the border between Overijssel and Friesland. On your right is De Rottige Meente, a nature reserve that was created by peat extraction in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Here you see a mosaic of water and land, reeds and flowering grasslands. Otters live in the Rottige Meente that have come to swim from the nearby Weerribben. The route ends at De Kluft Recreation Center, a wonderful place to stay in De Weerribben (one of the most beautiful nature reserves in the Netherlands).
