A detour at Renesse

With this walk you can stretch your legs and get a breath of fresh air on the coast of Schouwen-Duivenland. You walk along the North Sea beach of Renesse, but also through the vast Zeeland polder.

Sweet and salt
Walking in Zeeland is enjoying high skies. Especially on the coast, the clouds rarely stand still, blown around by the ever-active sea wind. Just behind the beach is Zoeten en Zouten Haard, a small nature reserve in the dunes with flower-rich grasslands. Countless orchids and yellow irises bloom here in early spring and summer. You can only admire the splendor of color from the side: the grasslands are too vulnerable to be entered.

Ellemeet
Behind the beach you walk through the characteristic Zeeland polder. Here is the village of Ellemeet, which arose in the twelfth century at a location a few hundred meters further south. Due to flooding and war violence, the villagers settled a little further north on a higher piece of land. The last part of the route you stroll along the beach again. That means enjoying the surf, running dogs and the salty air. After which you can enjoy something to eat and drink in the cozy beach restaurant Our Seaside.
