On Ameland you can take a beautiful walk through the ancient nature and the relatively new nature. Here you can see very well how people can direct the development of the landscape. You can also relax here in the beautiful nature.
Ancient dunes
From the starting point you quickly walk through the'Roosduinen\\\'. This area belongs to the old dune heath areas on Ameland, where two real types of heath have been growing for centuries. Along the way you might run into Saoy sheep, Herford cows or Icelandic ponies. These friendly animals graze in this area and thus maintain the heathland. Then you walk a bit on the Ballumerstuifdijk. This sand dike was built between 1804 and 1812 to prevent the island from breaking in two. You also pass two dune lakes. With a little patience and luck you can spot all kinds of special aquatic animals such as the natterjack toad.
BP pee
You then walk through the Ballumer forest to the Landweerdijk. Then you walk back into the forest, where you encounter the'BP puddle\\\'. This lake is named after the oil company British Petroleum that conducted seismic research on Ameland around 1960. However, the lake was created because the sand was used to strengthen the dunes at Nes.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
