Is the entire Elfstedentocht cycling a bit too much for you? Then cycle this route along the northern part of the tour of tours. Enjoy the peaceful nature, the historic churches and the Frisian farms along this route.
Eleven Cities Tour by bike
The starting point of the route is in Leeuwarden. From here you cycle to Bolsward, the start and finish of the annual Fiets Elfstedentocht. Every Whit Monday, around 15,000 cyclists start the 235-kilometre long tour here. Then you cycle through the historic fishing town of Harlingen to Franeker. There you will find the oldest still-working planetarium in the Netherlands.
The cozy city center of Leeuwarden
Cycle through dike villages and the mudflats towards Dokkum. Just before Leeuwarden you will pass the Eleven Cities Monument 'de Tegeltjesbrug'. This bridge is an arch of honour for the skaters of the Eleven Cities Tour. One of the tiles is by WA van Buren, the pseudonym of King Willem Alexander. He took part in the Eleven Cities Tour of 1986. Cycle via the Bonkefaert, the finish of the Eleven Cities Tour, to the historic city centre of Leeuwarden and catch your breath on one of the terraces along the canals.
