Description
The cycle route starts from the historic center of Gennep. You cycle along the beautiful floodplains of the Maas towards Heijen. The route continues via the nature reserves De Lange Ven in Heijen and the Looierheide in Gennep towards Ottersum. Here you cycle past the Roepaen estate with a former monastery complex, which now functions as a conference hall and cultural center. The estate, measuring 5 hectares, is used as a location for group activities.
Via the village of Ven-Zelderheide you pass the beautiful Reichswald. The Reichswald is one of the largest nature reserves in the Lower Rhine and was a popular hunting ground in the Middle Ages for imperial visitors to the Nijmegen Valkhof, but also for the Dukes of Guelders and Cleves. Permanent residents of this forest area are roe deer, red deer and wild boars.
The route ends via the historic Genneperheide back in the city center of Gennep, which is full of sights. Discover on Ellen Hoffmannplein, the unique mosaic square, why Gennep is also called Ceramics City. Also take a look at the old Town Hall of Gennep. In the year 2000, a pair of storks settled here, which still manages to find its way back to Gennep every summer and raises the young ones there.
