Looking out over the Frisian Lakes

Beautiful views over glittering lakes and babbling canals, old bell towers and charming villages: that is cycling in Friesland. This route takes you through De Friese Meren, a region where there is plenty to do.

Frisian Lakes
It is wonderful to pedal along the waving reed collars in Friesland. Every now and then you can keep your legs still for a moment to look out over the water. You drive past the Langweerderwielen and the Tjeukemeer, the largest inland lake in Friesland. Lovers of pleasure yachts or skûtsjes will be amazed by this. The Tjeukemeer is said to have swallowed the church and cemetery of the nearby village of Rohel during a storm surge.

Centuries-old villages
Until 1856, this picturesque village was only accessible by water. Here you will find, among other things, the beautiful Osinga State, the former town hall. You will also see some bell towers and beautiful mills on your route, such as the Skarrenmoune, a polder mill from 1888. Molen de Hersteller from 1857 was also used to drain the area. The local population saved this mill from demolition.

National Public Transport Museum
Time enough? Then also visit the National Public Transport Museum. Here you will learn everything about the history and present of public transport in the Netherlands, including through uniforms, documents and various attributes. There is also a model railway and the (often handmade!) scale models of buses and trains are also available: do you recognize a bus that you have traveled in yourself? There are still some old buses in and around the museum. If the weather is nice and there is sufficient interest, it is possible to take a tour with one of the available buses.
