Description

About appearances and countryside
This area used to be in the hands of counts, dukes and monasteries. They themselves had no time or inclination for the daily management of their estate. For that purpose they appointed so-called'scholten\\\'. They were given the management of an area with a number of farms. The largest and most beautiful farm was of course owned by the scholte himself. Over the centuries their influence decreased more and more. Accepting that was not an option. Against their will all appearances were kept up. With all the consequences that entailed...

Winterswijk
Winethereswick, Winriswic, Wenterswick......'Wik\\\' means a bounded and enclosed area, the area where a special right of a lord, namely manorial right, applied. The owners of the lands, who themselves lived elsewhere, divided their possessions into manors. Each manor consisted of about 20 farms. The farmers who lived and worked on these farms were serfs. The resident of the largest farm was given the pleasant task of managing and keeping an eye on everything, but was himself also a serf at his manor.

Scholtenstand
A court was led by a scholte. The scholten were farmers who were serfs themselves, but managed the area as a kind of steward for the actual owner of the land. A scholte guided the farmers, kept their records and ensured that the harvests and proceeds were paid to the lord of the court or to the monastery to which they belonged. Over the centuries, the scholten gained more power and grew into their own 'scholten class'; a class of wealthy large farmers.
