Description

About appearances and countryside
This area was once in the hands of counts, dukes and monasteries. They themselves had no time or inclination for the day-to-day management of their estate. For this purpose they appointed so-called'scholten\\\'. They were put in charge of an area with a number of farms. The largest and most beautiful farm was of course the Scholte itself. Over the centuries their influence continued to decline. Accepting that was not an option. All appearances were kept up against will and thanks. With all its consequences...

Winterswijk
Winethereswick, Winriswic, Wenterswick......'Wik\\\' means a bounded and enclosed area, the area where a special right of a lord, in particular court right, applied. The owners of the land, who themselves lived elsewhere, divided their possessions into courts. Each courtyard consisted of about 20 farms. The farmers who lived and worked on these farms were serfs. The resident of the largest farm was given the great task of managing and keeping an eye on everything, but was also a serf at his court.

Scholtenstand
A court was headed by a Scholte. The scholts were farmers who, although they were serfs themselves, managed the area as a kind of steward for the actual owner of the land. A scholte guided the farmers, conducted their administration and ensured that the harvests and proceeds were paid to the court lord or to the monastery to which they belonged. Over the centuries, the Scholten people gained more power and grew into their own'Scholten class\\\'; a class of wealthy large farmers.
