Description

About farmers and country people
In the Middle Ages society had great class differences. The clergy was the highest class, followed by the nobility, to which the wealthiest belonged. Together with the bourgeoisie they fought and worked under the leadership of their monarch in exchange for power and privileges. However, these three estates formed only a very small part of the population. The greater part, the peasants and agricultural labourers, belonged to no class at all. They had only few rights, but many more duties....

Wind law
In the Middle Ages, the Lords of Bergh had the right to earth, wind and water. Farmers could lease land, but had to pay land tax to their lord, whether or not in kind. But because the Lords of Bergh also possessed wind rights, the farmers were obliged to have their grain ground in one of the count's mills. This is how these Gentlemen collected income twice. That is why such mills are also called forced mills or ban mills. Opposite the count's mill are the remains of a horse-powered horse mill. If there happened to be no wind, this mill was gratefully used.

Castles and cities
From the 12th century society changes due to the rise of the cities. A whole new population of traders and free citizens is emerging. The rich and powerful have grandiose castles built in the countryside. Huis Bergh is an impressive example of this. The last duke of the'old stamp\\\' is Karel van Gelre. Not long after his death in 1538, Guelders was swallowed up by the Burgundian empire. The Middle Ages will be over for good...
