About country estates and estates
After the Middle Ages, the nobility has made way for a new elite, which has become rich mainly through trade. The'new rich\\\' have also made their way to the best jobs in politics. They are full of money and look for beautiful places outside the cities for a luxurious country house. They convert their wealth into paradise estates with beautiful country houses such as Huis Verwolde and Huis de Voorst.

Staring dome
In addition to a house, a country estate often included several outbuildings, such as an orangery, coach house, stable and a tea house. The latter had been known abroad for some time, but it took a while before this status symbol also made its appearance in the Netherlands. It was not until the Golden Age that some residents decided to waste their money on such'useless\\\' houses. When the first domes appeared, more soon followed. They were a great way to show how rich you were!

House De Voorst
Arnold Joost van Keppel, landed gentry of not too wealthy descent, received Huis De Voorst as a gift from King-Stadholder Willem III at the end of the 17th century. Willem had just moved into the brand new palace Het Loo, together with his wife Mary Stuart. At the time, Van Keppel worked at William's court and soon became the most intimate friend of the powerful king. Willem engaged the architects of Het Loo to design a majestic accommodation on the estate of Van Keppel's ancestors. Huis De Voorst became a small copy of Het Loo and was nicknamed'The Versailles of the Achterhoek\\\'.

The Huis De Voorst estate was built around 1700 by order of Arnold Joost van Keppel, who had earned a fortune at the court of Stadholder William III. Because of the resemblance to the palace of Willem III, De Voorst was nicknamed 'Het kleine Loo' and the lush gardens gave it the honorary title 'Versailles van de Achterhoek'.

Huis Verwolde

This was once a medieval castle with thick walls, three ramparts and three moats. You would think that it was easy to defend, but it was completely destroyed during a fierce battle between Gelre and the Oversticht (Overijssel). The current house, which was built in the 18th century, was sold in 1977 to the Geldersch Landschap & Kasteelen Foundation. Since then, the rooms have been refurbished according to their original functions.
