Description

Your route starts at Stadshotel & Proeflokaal't Oer, in the pleasant Hanseatic city of Zutphen. Perfect for a city walk! First you walk past the place where the timber market was held in the Hanseatic period. You will also pass the Librije of the Walburgis Church and the Zutphen municipal museum. Large parts of Zutphen's city wall have remained intact. During this walk you can view the remains of the city wall and city gates. On the way back you will pass De Berkelpoort, a water gate. Ships entered the city here via the Berkel. Between 1572 and 1591, the IJssel formed a front line in the war against Spanish rule. In the last year, Prince Maurits of Orange-Nassau conquered Zutphen. The remains of this defense work are now buried under Marschpoortstraat.
