Description

The starting point of the route is in the center of the city at VVV Zutphen. From here you walk past the place where the wood market was held in the Hanseatic period. You will also pass the Librije van de Walburgiskerk and the municipal museum Zutphen. Large parts of Zutphen's city wall have remained intact. During this walk you can see the remains of the city wall and city gates. You will also pass De Berkelpoort, a water gate. Ships entered the city here via the Berkel. Between 1572 and 1591, the IJssel formed a front line in the war against Spanish rule. In the last year Prince Maurits van Oranje-Nassau conquered Zutphen. The remains of this defense work are now buried under the Marschpoortstraat.
