By water, road and rail
The transport revolution is also called the little brother of the industrial revolution. The rising demand for raw materials, growing sales markets and longer distances require a different infrastructure. Tracks in the sand turn into cobblestone roads. Carts, carriages and horses are replaced by cars and flat boats by ships with a serious draft. That required a lot of shovels in the sometimes wild and boggy ground.
Hesse roads
A count lived in Hesse, Germany, who regularly organized hunting parties for the European nobility. Afterwards, the hunting loot was delivered to the participants' homes by citizens from Hesse. One thing led to another. The Hessians were also allowed to take merchandise back with them and this is how Hessen traffic slowly but surely emerged. At its height, goods were transported throughout Europe. After 1850, Hessen traffic slowly but surely disappeared and was replaced by water and rail transport.
Twente Canal
The canal was dug for a better supply of cotton and coal for the textile industry. The 65 km long canal was dug by unemployed people with shovel and wheelbarrow. Later, machines came to the rescue. The construction meant a major intervention in the landscape. Main roads were cut off. New roads, bridges and locks were constructed. Neighborhoods and villages were split in two, with all the consequences that entailed.
