People's lives pass but their names remain... Fewer and fewer people can live to tell the tale. What it was really like, their life during the war. A life full of fear, injustice and uncertainty. This route passes the farms of the heroes of the past. Past monuments on which the names of victims are written, past places where people made a difference.

Betty Straus
On the night before the liberation, a number of German soldiers sneak around the church. Are they seeking shelter or... so close to the end, perhaps forgiveness? None of that: Shortly afterwards the flames burst out of the church. One last act of cowardice...
Fortunately, the Germans have no idea of what is happening nearby in Azewijn. The Garben family farm is a temporary shelter for wounded Allies. In the hayloft, above the cows, the Jewish Betty Straus has been hiding for a year and a half, together with her brother and sister.

Chaplain Hegge
Chaplain Hegge, like his pastor Galama and fellow chaplain Van Rooijen, does not hide his disgust for the Nazis. During a service in 1941 they read a letter of protest. They then have the letter distributed in the parish. This proves to be enough for the Gestapo to capture the three. They are brought to Germany via Arnhem, Amersfoort and Vught. Van Rooijen and Galama do not survive Dachau camp. Chaplain Hegge goes to Bergen-Belsen via Sachsenhausen. He is one of the few to return after the liberation.
