The reconstruction
When on 1 April 1945 the gunpowder fumes cleared above Megchelen, it turned out that many houses and farms had been damaged beyond repair. With fresh courage, numerous emergency homes are built with the existing rubble. One is stronger or larger than the other. Almost all of those emergency homes have since disappeared. Only one tiny copy has been recently restored:'De Moezeköttel\\\'.

The old Moezeköttel
In 1940, a 7-year-old boy sees the German soldiers passing by De Zwanenburg. He does not yet realize that the war has started. In March 1945 the boy is 12. About ten German soldiers have taken up residence on the farm'De Moezeköttel\\\' owned by his uncle and aunt. They are never all there at once, but they rotate. The soldiers belong to two cannons, which are positioned on the west side of the farmhouse.

When the Allies send their reconnaissance planes ahead in March 1945, the German soldiers at De Moezeköttel become restless. The guns are set up under some poplars, but they still have no leaves at the end of March. So the guns are open targets. And then on Friday, March 23, the shooting starts. Every shot from the Germans is answered by the Canadians and English. Grenades explode and phosphor cartridges set farms on fire. Peace only returns after the liberation on March 28. Only some stones remain of the old'Moezeköttel\\\'.
