Resistance in the city center
Doetinchem seems to come through the occupation reasonably unscathed. In the early spring sun of 1945, the beautiful merchant houses, the atmospheric shophouses and the monumental church show off. But then things go wrong. On March 19, 21 and 23, the city was hit from the air. The Germans? No the Allies! Destiny or strategy?

The robbery
At the end of a warm afternoon in August 1944, six armed resistance fighters enter the distribution office located here. They lock the staff and guards in the basement and collect distribution receipts as fast as they can. Although they have carefully prepared the action, they overlook a cellar window. A guard manages to escape through that window and alerts the police. When it arrives, a firefight ensues. However, the robbers manage to escape with pockets full of receipts. Agent Dirk van de Horst, who has good contacts with the resistance, covers their tracks. They are therefore not detected.

In early 1945, the Germans placed a green van in Misset's garden and stretched a camouflage net over it. This does not go unnoticed by resistance fighters. They think it is a radio car that receives signals through boxes that hang from the tower of the Catharina Church. They pass this information on to the Allies in the now liberated Nijmegen via the PGEM telephone. When British planes drop the first bombs in Kees Misset's garden on March 21, the resistance is convinced that it is a deliberate attack. However, flight reports from the planes show that the pilots thought they were flying over Isselburg in Germany.
